Week 1

Warm Up Activity

We were introduced to the main 4 subjects that we are going to explore this semester. Generative Art, Projection mapping, Making and Interactive. Really excited to learn new things! Some of this subjects I have some experience with and can’t wait to explore more in this realm.

We started the class with Machine learning. Machine learning is a small part that makes up of AI, put simply it is a set of data that is given to a computer and with that it allows it to generate a new set of data.

We explore a few activities for warm-up. It was really fun playing around with the different codes and seeing how much data it could understand.

Activity 1

We were challenged to think about with the samples provided what can we create for the usage of graphic design. I teamed up with Charlotte, we played around with the filters and decided to go with object detection. We enjoyed the aesthetic of the different objects getting layered together creative a pretty interesting visual.

Concept

This ML reminded me of parking detection and the new AI cars in the market. So we set an angle to be an advertisement for the latest AI car promoting their latest smart feature. It is still an advertisement overall, so we need to consider the aesthetic and how to push that message across.

  • Clean
  • Aesthetic
  • Abstract but interesting

Process

To reduce the messiness, we hid the camera footage and added a black background to it. To showcase the distance between each object we explored the different opacity giving it depth to the overall image. Lastly the typography, we aimed to only change our type to all caps at first but Kapi did suggest that we try using the font that we are using in our Photoshop process. Took some extra time, but honestly worth it. It tied the visuals together really well. We also experimented with different shapes, it all gave slightly different aesthetics but it was interesting and in the end, we couldn't choose a singular one and used all 3. With some final touches on photoshop and placing it on a mockup, we got our final result.

Findings and Insights

Looking back, the project really came together through a mix of experimentation and refining details. Framing it as an AI car ad helped keep the visuals focused, while playing with opacity added depth in a simple but effective way. Typography turned out to be a bigger factor than expected—switching fonts last minute made everything feel more cohesive. We also couldn’t settle on just one shape, but in the end, using all three added variety rather than confusion. The final mockup stage really pulled everything together, proving that those last finishing touches make all the difference in making a design feel polished and complete.

“Simplicity is not the goal. It is the by-product of a good idea and modest expectations.”  — Paul Rand

Reflection

Overall, I think this activity helped me expand the horizons of what designers and code can do together. Leveraging the speed and quantity of what a computer can output allowed me to expand deeper into the realms of endless possibility. I truly enjoyed this activity, it was light-hearted, interesting and without a fix brief like what the outside world requires. It allowed me to explore and make beautiful accidents.

What I have learned

This activity really opened my eyes to the endless possibilities when design meets code. Seeing how machine learning can be used creatively—whether in advertising, interactive art, or even something as simple as Instagram filters—made me realize how much potential there is in this space. I loved the freedom to experiment without strict guidelines, which led to some unexpected but beautiful results. It reinforced the idea that technology isn’t just a tool, but a creative partner that can push design in new and exciting directions.
